India's crude steel output in May increased by 5% year-on-year due to increased demand

According to preliminary data released by the India Plants Committee on Tuesday, crude steel output in May this year increased by 5% year-on-year to 878 tons, as the apparent demand for steel in the country increased to 8.03 million tons in the month. It increased by 7.4% year-on-year.
The data released by the agency also showed that India's steel output in May this year was 10.85 million tons, up 1.6% year-on-year.
From April to May (initial fiscal year in India), India's crude steel output was 18.02 million tons, up 3.4% year-on-year; steel production during the same period was 16.29 million tons, up 6.5% year-on-year.
The data shows that although India's steel imports and exports in May fell year-on-year, India was a net importer of steel in May, as the decline in exports significantly exceeded the decline in imports.
