Iron ore producer Atlas Iron is advancing the development of the Corunna Downs iron ore mine in Pilbara, which previously moved to Australia
The Environmental Protection Authority submitted a project development plan application.
According to the iron ore development plan, the iron ore mine will develop five open pit mining sites, which will produce 23.3 million tons of iron ore within six years after commissioning, equivalent to 4 million tons per year.
Atlas Steel is expected to need to remove more than 23.1 hectares of topsoil, which has a total land area of 2,257 hectares.
A preliminary feasibility study in 2016 estimated that the project required a capital investment of A$47-55 million, and its iron ore cash cost was approximately $37-43 per ton.
Atlas Steel was acquired by Hancock Prospecting at the end of 2018.
