China’s H1 steel scrap consumption up 15.3% on year

China’s steel scrap consumption reached 101 million tonnes in H1 of 2019, up 13.4 million tonnes or 15.3% on year, with the growth higher than the 9.9% in steel production, according to the latest statistics from the scrap association, as domestic steelmakers consumed more scrap amid the soaring iron ore price especially since early February.
China’s blast-furnace (BF) steel mills, unsurprisingly, remained the core scrap users with the scrap consumption in converters averaging 206 kg/tonne steelmaking, up 6.9 kg/t or 3.5% on year, according to the latest statistics from the China Association of Metalscrap Utilization (CAMU).
