Nucor Corp. is expanding its tubular business, acquiring an Indiana-based mechanical and structural tube producer and separately is investing US$27.2 million to boost capabilities at an Alabama plant.

In Alabama, Nucor will be expanding its Trinity plant, adding new production, finishing, processing and packaging equipment and hiring additional workers, the company told AIST Steel News.  Nucor has owned the Trinity plant since 2016, when it acquired Independence Tube Corp. 

Meanwhile in Indiana, Nucor has acquired mechanical tube maker Century Tube LLC. Based in Madison, Ind., the company makes round, square, rectangular, oval and other special welded tubes. It also is a leading producer of induction heat-treated tubes for automotive applications and specializes in tubes for door intrusion beams.

It is housed in a 280,000-square-foot facility that sits on 33 acres.

Nucor said in a statement that the facility is an excellent fit with its tubular business and will provide it with new opportunities in the automotive sector. 

“Acquiring Century’s assets builds on a series of successful acquisitions of pipe and tube producers we have made in recent years. Two years ago, we did not compete in the pipe and tube market, but now these products are a growing part of our business,” the company told AIST Steel News. 

The facility has been renamed Nucor Tubular Products – Madison, Nucor said.
